A Nefertiti lift is Botox placed along the jawline and the bands of the neck to relax the muscle that pulls your lower face down. Done well, it gives a crisper jaw edge and a smoother neck for about three to four months, with no downtime. It’s subtle, it’s not a facelift, and it works best on people who have early jowling and visible neck bands rather than a lot of loose skin.

We hear about it in consults all the time now, usually from someone who caught their profile in a Zoom window or a vacation photo and didn’t love what the neck was doing. So here’s how it works, who it suits, and when we’d steer you toward something else.

What a Nefertiti Lift Actually Does

The star of this treatment is the platysma, a thin, sheet-like muscle that runs from your collarbones up over the jaw and into the lower face. When it’s strong or overactive, it tugs the jawline downward and shows up as vertical cords in the front of the neck when you talk, grimace, or lift something heavy.

Botox relaxes that pull. With the downward force turned down a notch, the muscles that lift the lower face get a little more say, and the jawline looks cleaner. The name comes from the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti and her long, defined neck. That’s the inspiration, not a promise.

The treatment usually involves a series of small, shallow injections in a line along the lower jaw and down any visible neck bands. If you want more detail on the bands themselves, our post on treating platysmal bands with Botox goes deeper.

Who’s a Good Candidate (and Who Isn’t)

The best results we see are in people in their late 30s through their 50s who have a decent amount of skin elasticity, mild softening along the jaw, and neck cords that pop when they clench or speak.

A quick mirror test helps. Gently pull the skin along your jaw back toward your ears. If the jawline looks noticeably sharper, and you see vertical bands in your neck when you grit your teeth or say “eee,” you’re probably in the right territory.

It also helps if what bothers you is early jowling rather than deep folds of loose skin, and if you’re happy with a small, natural change you’ll maintain a few times a year.

Where we’d be candid and say it’s not the right tool: significant skin laxity, heavy jowls, or fullness under the chin that’s mostly fat. Botox can’t tighten skin and it can’t remove fat. For a soft double chin, Kybella for under-chin fat is usually a better conversation. For jaw definition from structure, filler along the jaw can do things Botox can’t, which we cover in our guide to jawline contour filler.

And if a lot of the heaviness is really at the corners of your mouth, the DAO muscle may be the bigger player. We broke that down in Botox for DAO and downturned mouth corners, and the two treatments are often done together.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

In our chair, we’ll start by having you clench, grimace, and talk so we can see how your platysma moves. Everyone’s bands sit in slightly different places, and some people pull much harder on one side. That assessment matters more than any standard injection map.

The injections themselves are quick, usually 10 to 15 minutes. They’re shallow and use a tiny needle, so most people describe a series of small pinches rather than anything painful. Some people get little bumps at each injection point that settle within an hour or so.

Unit counts vary a lot depending on how strong your muscle is and how many bands we’re treating. Your nurse practitioner will give you a specific number after the assessment, along with the cost, before anything is drawn up. We’d rather start a little conservative and add at a follow-up than overdo a neck.

The timeline

Like Botox anywhere else, you’ll start noticing a change around day 3 to 5, with the full effect at about two weeks. Results typically last three to four months, sometimes a bit less in people with very strong muscles. If you’re curious about the general pattern, our post on how long Botox lasts covers what speeds up and slows down wear-off.

Risks and Why Technique Matters on the Neck

Most side effects are minor: tenderness, small bruises, and occasionally a mild headache. Bruises along the jaw are easy to cover, but if you have a beach weekend or a big photo day coming up, give yourself two weeks of runway.

The less common risks are the reason we take neck Botox seriously. The muscles that help you swallow and hold your head up sit deeper in the neck. If product is placed too deep or too much is used, it can lead to trouble swallowing, a weak-feeling neck, or changes in your smile if it spreads into the lip muscles. These effects are uncommon and temporary, but they’re not fun for weeks at a time.

That’s why this is an advanced treatment. Our Botox injectors in Orlando keep the injections superficial and the doses measured, and we won’t chase a dramatic result on a first visit.

Nefertiti Lift vs. Other Ways to Define the Jawline

People often come in asking for this treatment when what they want is a sharper jaw in general. Here’s a simple way to think about the options:

Treatment What it addresses Best for
Nefertiti lift (Botox) Downward muscle pull and neck bands Early jowling, visible platysma cords
Jawline or chin filler Lost structure and definition A soft jaw angle or weak chin
Masseter Botox Bulky jaw muscles from clenching A wide, square lower face
Kybella Fat under the chin A stubborn double chin

A lot of our patients end up with a combination. For someone with a square, clenched jaw, masseter Botox plus a light dose along the neck can slim and sharpen the lower face at the same time. Quick answers

How long does a Nefertiti lift last?

Most people get three to four months. Strong muscles and a fast metabolism can shorten that a bit, and consistent maintenance tends to make results feel steadier over time.

Does Botox in the neck hurt?

Not much. The injections are shallow with a very fine needle, so most patients describe quick pinches. We can use ice if you’re nervous.

Can Botox lift jowls?

It can soften early jowling by relaxing the muscle that pulls the jaw down, but it won’t lift heavy jowls or tighten loose skin. For more advanced laxity, we’ll talk honestly about filler, collagen stimulators, or a surgical consult.

Is the Nefertiti lift safe?

In experienced hands it’s considered a safe, well-established treatment. The main rare risks, like trouble swallowing or neck weakness, come from product placed too deep or too much of it, which is why technique and conservative dosing matter.
