What Are GLP-1 Medications?

If you’ve done everything right and the weight still won’t stay off, you’re not alone, and it isn’t a lack of willpower. GLP-1 medications like Ozempic® and tirzepatide work with your biology to quiet constant hunger and help you lose weight steadily, with a licensed provider guiding you every step.

GLP-1 medications mimic glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. They slow how quickly your stomach empties, signal fullness to the brain and help regulate blood sugar. The result: you feel satisfied with smaller portions and think about food less, which makes steady weight loss far more achievable. Most are a once-weekly injection.

Semaglutide, the medication in Ozempic®, acts on the GLP-1 pathway. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro® and Zepbound®) acts on two pathways, GLP-1 and GIP. In weight-loss clinical trials over about 68–72 weeks, adults lost an average of about 15% of body weight with semaglutide and up to about 21% with the highest dose of tirzepatide, alongside diet and exercise. Individual results vary.

We prescribe brand-name Ozempic® and brand-name tirzepatide pens. Ozempic® and Mounjaro® are FDA-approved for adults with type 2 diabetes, so when they are prescribed for weight loss they are used off-label. Zepbound® (tirzepatide) is FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Your provider will explain which option fits you and why.

Personalized Plans

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Tirzepatide (Zepbound®) is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnea. We use the same guidelines when deciding whether a GLP-1 is right for you.

GLP-1s may not be right if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, or a history of pancreatitis. Your provider reviews your full history before prescribing.

Personal, In-Person Care in Orlando

LightTouch has served Orlando since 2004. Instead of an anonymous app, you see licensed providers at our W Sand Lake Rd clinic who adjust your dose, manage side effects and support you all the way through.

As the scale moves, our medical weight loss and body contouring program can help with stubborn areas, Kybella® can treat under-chin fat, and Sculptra® can restore facial volume lost with weight loss.

How our GLP-1 program works

Consultation & Medical Evaluation

Talk through your goals, history and past weight-loss attempts. A licensed provider reviews your history, vitals and any recommended lab work to confirm a GLP-1 is safe for you.

Gradual Dosing & Regular Check-Ins

We start at a low dose and increase gradually over several weeks to limit side effects, with regular check-ins to track progress and adjust.

Nutrition, Muscle & Maintenance

GLP-1s work best alongside good habits. We coach you on protein, hydration and strength training to protect muscle as you lose fat, and build a plan to help keep weight off when you reach your goal.

Managing Side Effects

Nausea is most common when starting or increasing a dose. Eating smaller meals, slowing down, limiting greasy foods and staying hydrated usually helps, and we adjust your dose if needed.

Sound Familiar? Challenges GLP-1 Treatment Helps You Overcome

These are the struggles we hear most from patients starting medical weight loss.

“I’ve tried every diet and the weight always comes back.”

Your body fights weight loss with hunger hormones and a slower metabolism. GLP-1 medications target those signals directly, making a lower-calorie routine feel sustainable instead of a constant battle.

“I’m hungry all the time and can’t stop thinking about food.”

Many patients describe less “food noise” within weeks. GLP-1s help you feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer.

“I want real medical guidance, not just an app.”

You see licensed providers in person at our Orlando clinic who screen you, adjust your dose and help you manage side effects.

“I’m worried about side effects.”

Nausea is the most common, especially early on. We start low, increase gradually and coach you on simple steps that help, adjusting your dose if needed.

“My weight is affecting my health.”

For many people, losing weight can help with related conditions such as blood pressure or blood sugar. Your provider will review your health history and monitor you along the way.

“I’m worried about losing muscle or getting a hollow face.”

We coach you on protein and strength training to protect muscle, and treatments like Sculptra® and dermal fillers can restore facial volume.

Your GLP-1 Journey

GLP-1 weight loss is gradual and steady. Here is what a typical journey looks like; individual results vary.

Weeks 1–4

Start on a low dose. Many patients notice less appetite and fewer cravings.

Months 2–4

Your dose increases gradually as your body adjusts, and weight loss becomes steady.

Months 6–12

Continued progress with regular check-ins, nutrition coaching and dose adjustments.

Maintenance

Once you reach your goal, we build a plan with you to help keep the weight off.

Frequently Asked Questions About GLP-1 Weight Loss

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss?

Ozempic is FDA-approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. Prescribing it for weight loss is off-label, which is legal and common when a provider judges it appropriate. The same medication, semaglutide, is FDA-approved for weight management under the name Wegovy.

Is Ozempic the same as Wegovy?

Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is the version approved for chronic weight management, at different doses.

Is Mounjaro the same as Zepbound?

Both contain tirzepatide. Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes; Zepbound is approved for weight management.

Which works better, semaglutide or tirzepatide?

In clinical trials, tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss than semaglutide, but the right choice depends on your health, goals, side effects and insurance. Your provider will help you decide.

What are the side effects?

The most common are nausea, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting, usually mild and most noticeable when starting or increasing a dose. Less common but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and low blood sugar when combined with some diabetes medications. These medications carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animal studies.

How fast will I see results?

Many patients notice less appetite in the first few weeks. Weight loss is gradual as the dose increases over several months.

Do I have to take it forever?

Not necessarily, but studies show many people regain weight after stopping. We build a maintenance plan with you.

Will I lose muscle?

Some lean mass loss happens with any weight loss. Protein and strength training help protect it.

What about facial volume loss?

Rapid weight loss can make the face look hollow. Treatments like Sculptra and dermal fillers can restore lost volume naturally.

Does insurance cover it?

Sometimes, for brand-name medication, depending on your plan and diagnosis. We can help you understand your options.

How is a medical weight loss program different from dieting on my own?

You get a prescription medication that targets hunger signals, a licensed provider who monitors your health and adjusts your dose, and coaching on nutrition and muscle preservation.

Can I drink alcohol on GLP-1 medication?

Alcohol can worsen nausea and affect blood sugar, so many providers recommend limiting it. Ask your provider what is safe for you.

What should I eat on a GLP-1?

Smaller meals with plenty of protein, vegetables and water tend to work best, while greasy or very sugary foods can worsen nausea. We give you practical guidance.

Can I use GLP-1s with other treatments?

Yes. Many patients pair weight loss with body contouring, Sculptra or fillers as they reach their goal.
